Most automatic feeders are built for dry kibble, since the hopper-and-auger design does not suit wet food that spoils and clogs. If you feed wet food, look for a dedicated wet-food feeder with sealed compartments and, ideally, an ice pack. Check the food type a model supports rather than assuming it takes both.

Portioning is usually close but not laboratory-precise, and kibble shape and size affect how consistently the auger measures. Expect small variation from meal to meal and calibrate against how much your pet actually eats. For a pet on a tightly controlled diet, weigh a few portions to confirm before relying on the numbers.

For pets that share a space, look at capacity, multiple daily slots, and, if one pet steals food, a microchip feeder that opens only for the right animal. A single shared feeder works when pets eat the same food on the same schedule, while separate diets usually call for per-pet control. Camera-equipped models help you confirm who is eating.

They can be, especially when one pet needs a prescription diet or another tends to raid the bowl. By opening only for a registered chip or tag, they keep each pet on its own food without you standing guard. The trade-off is a higher price and some setup, so weigh it against how often food-stealing is actually a problem.

Wipe the bowl and food chute regularly, ideally between refills, and give the hopper a fuller cleaning when you change bags, since kibble dust and oils build up. Dry everything before refilling to avoid clogs and mold. A clean feeder also keeps portioning consistent.
