Smart Pet Doors

A microchip door reads the ID chip already implanted in your pet, so nothing has to hang on the collar. A collar-activated door reads an RFID tag or key on the collar instead, which works for pets without a compatible chip but can be lost. Both keep the door locked until they detect your pet approaching.

That is the main point of a selective door: it stays locked and opens only for a recognized chip or collar tag, which keeps out strays and neighborhood wildlife in most cases. The usual limitation is a determined animal that slips through in the moment the door opens for your pet. Selective entry is a strong deterrent rather than an absolute barrier.

Many connected doors let you set curfew hours, keeping a cat in overnight for example, and assign per-pet permissions so some animals can go out while others cannot. How much control you get varies by model and usually runs through the app. Check whether a door supports multiple pet profiles if your animals need different rules.

Most battery-powered doors warn you in the app as the batteries run low, and many hold their lock state or fall back to a manual setting rather than swinging open. The exact behavior differs by model, so it is worth knowing whether a given door locks, unlocks, or can be worked by hand on failure. Keeping spare batteries on hand avoids surprises.

Doors made for exterior walls generally include weather seals and flaps that limit drafts, and some use magnetic seals for a tighter close. Fit and insulation quality vary, so a poorly sealed door can leak air. Look for clear sealing details and a flap sized correctly for your pet.

Many models fit standard doors, and some offer kits or adapters for walls, glass, or screen doors, though glass usually needs professional installation. Panel inserts for sliding doors are common too. Confirm the mounting options and your opening's thickness before buying.
